HellO, World!

Bayern is now the hotest spot on Earth! Obama saw that I’ve been in a short trip in this region, so he decided that he must join the Prime Minister of Germany, Angela Merkel, for a beer. In Bavaria, where else? As you can see HERE. Prost, Mr. President!

Anyway, I don’t want to speak again about beer, sausages or cabbage. Nope, enough about food! I will tell you something about the castles that I saw in my short trip to Northern Bavaria, in a region also known as Franconia. I’ve been invited there by The German National Tourism Board, and I diwscovered a beautiful region of this country, that hides many historical treasures.  And some of them I found in Coburg, the city of the famous Dukes of Saxe-Coburg, one of the oldest and powerful German noble families. Actually, they were so powerful, that at one moment, close to the end of XIXth Century, their family members were kings and queens for some of the biggest nations in Europe.

And their first residence was right here, at Veste Coburg. Also known as the „Franconian Crown”, the Veste dominates the surrounding countryside with is mighty walls and towers. The Veste Coburg was the historical seat of the independent duchy of Coburg in Franconia, which now is part of the German state of Bavaria. Martin Luther lived in the Veste for a number of months during the Diet of Augsburg in 1530. In the twentieth century, the castle was the residence of Charles Edward, Duke of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha, a grandson of Queen Victoria, who was also (until 1919) the 2nd Duke of Albany in the United Kingdom. The Veste now houses museums, including a collection art objects and paintings that belonged to the ducal family of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha, a large collection of arms and armor, significant examples of early modern coaches and sleighs, and important collections of prints, drawings and coins. Well, if you are a fan of Game of Thrones, you will have the sensation that you just discovered Castle Black.

When is the perfect time to visit Coburg?

Anytime! In Spring and Autumn because the gardens of the castles (yep, there are many more in Coburg) will look fabulous! In Summer, for the Samba Festival, the biggest samba event in the World, outside Brazil! And in Winter, for the famous Christmas Market! You can find all the information you need on the website of The German National Tourist Board.

LOve,

O.
